Advances in cancer treatment have resulted in an increasing number of women living well beyond their cancer diagnosis. However, treatment-induced menopause and the exacerbation of menopausal symptoms remain significant survivorship issues that can have a profound impact on quality of life, physical health, psychological wellbeing, relationships, and adherence to cancer therapies. Despite this, many cancer survivors report unmet needs relating to menopause assessment, symptom management, and access to appropriate support.
Drawing on almost two decades of experience in breast cancer nursing and current practice within a specialist menopause service, this presentation will explore the unique challenges faced by women experiencing menopause after cancer. The presentation will examine common gaps in care, including delayed recognition of menopausal symptoms, fragmented care pathways, inequitable access to specialist services, and limited clinician confidence in managing complex menopause presentations. It will highlight the central role nurses can play in identifying symptoms, providing evidence-based education, supporting shared decision-making, advocating for patients, and facilitating timely referral to appropriate multidisciplinary services.
