Aim: To outline national progress in implementing the National Framework for Genomics in Cancer Control (the Framework), and to highlight early achievements and priorities for embedding genomics into routine cancer care to support personalised and equitable outcomes for all Australians.
Methods: Implementation of the Framework is being progressed through the development of a coordinated National Implementation Plan aligned with the Australian Cancer Plan. Activities are structured across staged time horizons and informed by consultation with governments, clinicians, researchers, and community stakeholders including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and other priority populations. Cancer Australia has initiated a number of activities in line with strategic objectives in the Framework with a focus on education and awareness, genomics health literacy, and ensuring that cancer genomic research and data are representative of population diversity.
Results: Early progress demonstrates national momentum in advancing genomics-informed cancer care. Key initiatives include work with the Australian Alliance for Indigenous Genomics to support Indigenous-focussed actions in the Framework, the development of genomic health literacy resources with inclusion of a focus on priority populations and inherited cancer risk, and investment in translational research and clinical trials via the Cancer Genomics Clinical Trials Fund.
Conclusion: Substantial early progress has been made in translating the Framework into action. Continued focus is required on scaling implementation, strengthening system integration, and ensuring equitable access to genomics-informed cancer care. The Framework provides a critical foundation for enabling precision oncology in Australia and improving outcomes across the cancer continuum.
